Wood floors are commonly used in apartments because they are good for home decor and look classic. People assume that hardwood floors are very hard because of their names. Despite this, hardwood floors do get damaged easily if they are not properly taken care of.
Materials like tile, stone, and laminate are much more tough and strong. They last longer than wood flooring. Wood flooring is relatively soft and vulnerable to environmental conditions and gets damaged easily in comparison to other materials. Over time, the wood floor might get scratches and gouges on the surface and this is because of how things are carried out daily.
Deep scratches and gouges on the surface that have also impacted the wood inside might be difficult to fix completely. However, there are several ways to fix them in a way that they are less noticeable.
Even after taking good care, it is probable that the hardwood floor might get scratches, dents, and gouges. We have indicated a few tips and tricks to avoid these things and protect the floor. A few points on how the floor can be fixed are also discussed below.
Fixing the Gouges on the Floor
If you do not like the dents on the floor, they look unattractive and ruin the picturesque decor of your apartment. Here’s an effective way on how you can make it less noticeable. Take a clean towel and wet one of its corners. Do not dampen the whole towel because you don’t want the water dripping on the floor everywhere.
Put this slightly damp towel over the dent that you wish to hide. Then place the tip of the hot iron over the damp towel that you put earlier. This will produce a little burst of steam into the wood floor. To see effective results, repeat the same steps over and over again. If the dent is big and old then it is difficult to remove it completely but doing this will make its existence almost negligible and it won’t be noticeable as such.
Although this technique won’t work if the gouge is too deep. If the wood fibres are ruined then you will have to use some sort of wood fillers to fill the dent or gouge. There is no other way around.
Paint stores usually keep different sorts of wood fillers. If you are not able to find a paint store in the market near you then you might as well want to check out the paint section of a hardware store or a home center.
DAPs plastic fillers are a good choice and can be used to fill the cavities before the final finish is applied. These patches harden after drying up. Once this is done, you may sand them whatever wood is available. You can apply stain too as an additional step. Post this, apply a layer of finish on the surface for a faultless appearance. The benefit of using solvent fillers in such cases is that they dry up quickly. This allows the sanding step to happen in less time.
The Color of the Hardwood Floor
One downside of using a stain or finish is that if the floor has already been stained and finished then the color might not match with the original shade of the floor. To avoid this, it is suggested that you get a filler of a neutral color and mix the desired shade of color yourself. You can also buy a filler that is already mixed in color.
A smarter way of filling these openings in the wooden floor is to use a filler that is especially available for floors that have a finish. Otherwise, the regular sand filler might create a bigger area that you will have to repair all over again. These specially designed fillers are available in tins or putty or sticks and even lead pencils with a fat nib. The benefit of these fillers is that they won’t dry.
This material can very easily be pushed into the opening and the excess can be wiped off since it has a very waxy consistency. DAP plastic putty and DAP blending stick are good options to go for.
Another benefit of such ready-made fillers is that it gives shine to the surface once applied so you don’t require an extra coat of finisher over it. You can easily mix your favorable color and get your desired shade.
Another effective trick that can be considered is to use putty or repair sticks. This does not affect the wood around the spot that you are repairing and it gets easily repairable.
It is difficult to repair bigger gouges and they are more noticeable even if you fill them with the material. At times, it is visible even after getting the right shade or blending the colors to get the closest color match.
The wood has natural patterns because of the growth of the rings and color changes that the trees go through when they are still planted in the soil. This is why a single solid color of the filler cannot be made similar to the shade variations and patterns on the wood because it is naturally occurring.
Usually, the wood is derived from an Oak tree. The wood of an Oak tree has really unique patterns plus the shade is very different and not easily available. The synthetic colors cannot match the natural color variation on the wood or the bark of that tree. Most parquet floors have this type of wood being used. It has streaks on them called rays.
This color palette cannot be easily obtained since these color variations are complicated and it is tough to replicate the same kind of streaks using paints. A great hack is to use pens or markers of similar color. There are repair kits available in the market that have sticks used for blending and a few markers with a good range of brown or wood-like shades. These markers of the tool kit can be utilized later too for making any future scratches less noticeable easily.
A good hack is to buy a permanent marker. There are many available in the market that has an ultrafine tip. This can be utilized to add the minute details like the rays that are present in the wood.
This article covered almost every important thing that you need to take care of if your hardwood floor gets gouged or dented easily. This not only looks unattractive but can also hold water and ruin the wood further.
